About San Mateo
San Mateo, which is Spanish for “Saint Matthew”, is a city located in the San Francisco Bay Area, in San Mateo County, in the US state of California. It is one of the largest suburbs on the San Francisco Peninsula, having a population of approximately 100 000.
San Mateo was incorporated in 1864, but its history dates way back. Its first inhabitants were the Coastanoans, as the Spanish explorers called them, a tribe of the Ohlone Indians, which lived in the area from San Francisco to Belmont for at least 4000 years before explorers first arrived on the Peninsula.
